HELLBOY A DEVO

For those of you who were wondering how my lesson went, or missed it for one reason or another here is the break down. This is the question sheet I used and i will try to add some of the comments we got in class. This makes more sense if you have seen the movie, but its not required i suppose. 

HELLBOY A DEVO

 

1. The Movie starts and ends the same way, with a question. “What is it that makes a man a man? Is it his origins, or is it something deeper than that?” What do you think? The consensus after seeing the movie was, pretty much the choices one makes with what they have been given, is what truly defines us.
2. Through out the movie we see that during the war, there was a whole other secret war going on, unbeknown to the public, in fact it was still going on.
1. What were some of the reactions to this? Denial, or an attempt to explain it away, until they came face to face with it. 
2. Familiar to anything?
3. Professor Bloom says: “In the absence of light darkness prevails.”
1.  What does that mean? When there is no light all there is is darkness, but darkness can never cover up even the tiniest bit of light.
2. Agree or disagree?
3. What does that sound like? All it takes for evil to thrive is for good men to do nothing. 
   

   John 3:19 ¹⁹This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.

4. And in the very next breath he continues “There are things that go bump in the night, make no mistake about that, and we are the ones that bump back.” Go for it

a. What does it mean to bump back? To fight against evil, to not become darkness

b. What are ways that WE are to do that too? sometimes by just not responding in kind. To show God through our life. To be above reproach. 

5. Abe: “Behind this door a dark entity, evil, ancient, and hungry.” Can we put a verse to that? 1 Peter 5:8  ⁸Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
   The devil isn't a red man with horns and a pitchfork, hes smart, evil and he will uses any chance he has to utterly and completely destroy you. 
6. Rasputin: Offers some pretty awesome deals during the movie: eternal life, everlasting beauty, the ability to rule over the entire world… and the opportunity to serve him.
1. Multiple people are faced with this offer. Can you point some of them out Hellboy, the German chick
2.  What are the final outcomes of their personal choices The German lady chose to follow Rasputin and she was "blessed" with eternal youth. But in the end when the dark entity was done with her it spit her out and through her a aside, crushing her without a second thought. 
   Helloboy turned him down, and throughout the movie continually got beat down, however he is the one who got to live.
7. Hellboy likes to play the lonely hero.
1. Does this work out for him? No not really, he either ends up getting really hurt, or someone dies. Its important to note he doesn't do this to seek glory, but to keep others safe. Still he always needs someone to end up helping him.
2. Why or why not? Despite how big and strong he is and the fact that its "his job"there is always a special skill some one else brings to the table. Help carry the burden if you will.
3. Do we ever try to do the same thing? Umm Yeah

                                                              i.      “If there’s trouble all us freaks have is each other” I think at one point we have all felt like the freak, sorta where we got the idea for DC Talks much accepted song "Jesus Freak" Who else better to help us then the people fighting the same secret war with us side by side.

8. “Born a demon can’t change that, but you will help him in essence to become a man”
1. Make a parallel We came to God horrible awful sinners in a sense destined for Hellboy, and destined for Hellgirl. but all of that changed, and what we were when we came to the Father doesn't matter any more
2. Some time after making this statement Professor Bloom is given the opportunity to be reminded of who Hellboy really is and he responds “I know what to call him, I call him son.”
3. Now does that sound familiar? I hope so.
9. Rasputin Challenges Professor Bloom with the statement “Your God chooses to remain silent.”
1. Do we ever get asked that? It seems to be a pretty common response when people are losing a loved one, or lacking a job etc... You will here them ask why is God remaining silent
2. Do we ever think that ourselves? I think so
3. Does he? Sometimes he does I believe, sometime we just can't hear Him. 
10. Last section. At the end of the movie there is a very important show down. Myers “Remember who you are.” “You have a choice; your father gave you that.” Rasputin: “No you don’t”
1. Have we ever heard this rebuttal? Surely not in a world that claims we are just a product of genes.
2. What are some areas in your life where you have no control over what you were given to start with? Various impairments, bad genes that run in the family etc..
3. Do you really have a choice though? It was brought up that during WWII. There were a group of Jews that decided despite the fact that, they were being treated like animals, and their family was dieing around them or in front of their eyes, they still had the choice to be happy. 
4. What are some of those choices? We have the choice to acknowledge our problems and face them, to seek medial, or help from others. We have the choice to remain faithful anyway.
5. His father left him something, something that made him be able to choose, what was that? Familiar? His father left him a cross.
